Documents of Dissent

Chinese Political Thought Since Mao

Publication Date: 7/31/1980

How do informed, intelligent citizens react when a leader of mythical stature like Mao Zedong dies and is replaced by an unknown? The events of the immediate post-Mao era--the fall of the Gang of Four, the rehabilitation of Deng Xiaoping, the Four Modernizations Campaign, the flood of wall posters advocating freedom and democracy--are evidence of factional struggle and political turmoil long hidden behind the facade of doctrinal purity and uniformity.

Translated here are four documents dated between December 1975 and October 1977, ranging from an ultra-conservative attack on Mao to a collection of excerpts of Mao's utterances on foreign relations (some previously unpublished). Taken together, these four documents present a picture of extraordinary political vitality in China and contribute to our understanding of ideological currents and factions in China.
