Gary Dean Best is professor of history at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, where he has taught since 1975. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii in 1973 and lectured at Sophia University in Tokyo, 1973 to 1974, while under a fellowship from the Committee on American-East Asian Relations of the American Historical Association. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Japan from 1974 to 1975, and held an NEH fellowship for 1982 to 1983.
